Rugby betting

Rugby betting, try by try

The short answer

Rugby betting means staking money on who wins a match, by how many points, or how many points are scored. There are two codes: rugby union and rugby league, which have different team sizes and scoring. A match is two 40-minute halves and can end in a draw, so the main market often has three outcomes.

  • Big competitions

The Rugby World Cup, the Six Nations and the Rugby Championship.

  • 80 minutes

Two halves of 40 minutes with a short break.

  • Two codes

Union and league differ in team size and points, so check which you're betting on.

  • Draws happen

Match result usually has three outcomes.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. Rugby union is 15 a side and a try is worth five points. Rugby league is 13 a side and a try is worth four.
  2. A match is two halves of 40 minutes and can finish level in most league and pool games.
  3. Handicaps tend to be large, because the gap between sides can be wide.
  4. Most markets settle on the 80 minutes, so check the rules if a knockout game goes to extra time.

01Markets

The rugby markets you'll see most

Match result and Handicap are the usual starting points, though what's open changes from one rugby fixture to the next.

  • Match result

    Home, draw or away?

Pick the winner or the draw after 80 minutes. A draw is uncommon, so it's usually priced high.

Check team news, as a change at fly-half can change how a side plays.

  • Handicap

    By how many points?

The favourite gives up points. At -6.5 they must win by seven or more.

Handicaps exist because the gaps are large. Look at this when the match price is too short.

  • Total points

    Over or under the line?

Add both teams' points and compare them with the line, such as 44.5.

Wet weather usually means fewer tries and more kicking.

  • Winning margin

    Which points band?

Pick the winner and a band, such as 1 to 12 points or 13 or more.

It pays more than the match result but needs two things to go right.

  • Try scorer

    Who scores a try?

Bet on a player to score the first try or any try in the match. Wingers and forwards near the line often lead this market.

Check the named team first. A player who doesn't start can void or sink the bet.

02Scoring

How is scoring different in rugby union and rugby league?

The two codes look alike but score differently, so a total or handicap from one doesn't carry over to the other.

  • Union 5, league 4

    Try

A player grounds the ball over the try line. It's the main way to score in both codes.

  • 2

    Conversion

A kick at goal after a try, worth two in both codes.

  • Union 3, league 2

    Penalty goal

A kick at goal awarded after a penalty.

  • Union 3, league 1

    Drop goal

A kick from open play, after the ball has bounced.

  • 15 or 13

    Team size

Union has 15 players a side and league has 13.

  • 10 minutes

    Sin bin

A yellow card usually sends a player off for ten minutes, leaving the team a player short.

03Settlement

What happens to a rugby bet if a match goes to extra time?

Usually the 80 minutes settle it

A knockout match that's level after 80 minutes may go to extra time, and some competitions then use kicks or other tie-breakers. Most match result bets are decided on the score at 80 minutes, so a draw can win even if one team goes on to advance.

To-qualify and outright markets work differently, because they do follow who goes through. The betting rules and the market title tell you which applies.

04In-play

What should you watch when betting on rugby live?

A try can swing a match by seven points in one go, so prices tend to move in jumps.

  • Yellow cards

A team a player short for ten minutes often concedes points, and the price moves as soon as the card comes out.

  • Play near the line

A long spell of attack close to the try line can lift a total before anything has been scored.

  • The bench

Replacement forwards often arrive around the hour mark, and a strong bench can change the last 20 minutes.

  • The kicker's range

A team within range of the posts can take three points in union, so a narrow lead is rarely safe.

To close a rugby position before the end, lay the side you backed at the current price. The live betting guide explains how.

06FAQ

Rugby betting questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

01

What is the difference between rugby union and rugby league?

Union has 15 players a side and a try is worth five points. League has 13 players a side and a try is worth four. Conversions are worth two in both, but penalties and drop goals score differently.

02

Can a rugby match end in a draw?

Yes. Most league and pool matches can finish level after 80 minutes, so the match result market usually has a draw option.

03

What does a -6.5 handicap mean in rugby betting?

The favourite must win by seven points or more for the bet to win. At +6.5, the underdog can lose by up to six and the bet still wins.

04

How is winning margin different from a rugby handicap?

Winning margin asks you to pick the team and a band of points. A handicap only asks whether a team beats the line, so it has fewer ways to lose and usually pays less.

05

How do I work out what a rugby bet pays?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds. ₹500 at 1.50 returns ₹750, which is ₹250 profit.
