Basketball betting

Basketball betting, from tip-off to the final buzzer

The short answer

Basketball betting means staking money on a game: who wins, by how many points, or how many points are scored in total. The point spread gives the weaker team a head start so both sides are close to even money. On KhelKing you can bet on the NBA, the EuroLeague and international basketball, before tip-off or live while the game is played.

Prices are an example. The same ₹500 on the home team at -5.5 and 1.90 would return ₹950 if they win by six or more.

Key takeaways

  • The three main markets are match winner, point spread and total points. Learn those before anything else.
  • A -5.5 spread means the favourite has to win by six or more. Half-point lines can't land exactly, so there's no refund.
  • Full-game markets usually include overtime. Quarter and half markets settle on that period alone.
  • Rest days, injuries and back-to-back games move NBA prices as much as form does.
  • Leagues

NBA, EuroLeague and FIBA international games, plus other leagues through the season.

  • Pre-match and live

Bet before tip-off, or in-play as the score moves.

  • Four quarters

12 minutes each in the NBA and 10 in FIBA and EuroLeague games.

  • No draw

Ties go to overtime, so a full game always has a winner.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. KhelKing basketball markets cover the NBA, the EuroLeague and international basketball, before tip-off and live.
  2. Back a favourite at -5.5 on the spread and they need to win by six or more.
  3. Overtime usually counts in full-game markets, while quarter and half markets settle on their own period.
  4. Spread and total bets are often priced close to 1.90 on each side.

01Markets

The basketball markets you'll see most

Match winner, the spread and total points cover most of the betting on any game. The rest narrow the question down to a quarter or a player.

  • Match winner

    Who wins the game?

Also called the moneyline. Two outcomes, overtime included. Big NBA favourites can be priced very short, so the return is small.

If the favourite pays too little, look at the spread instead.

  • Point spread

    Who covers the line?

The favourite gives up points and the underdog gets them. Back the favourite at -5.5 and they have to win by six or more.

The spread chart below shows every result for a -5.5 line.

  • Total points

    Over or under the line?

Add both teams' scores and compare them with the line, such as 220.5 in an NBA game. Overtime points usually count.

Two fast teams push totals up. Two strong defences pull them down.

  • Quarter and half

    Who wins a single period?

Winner, spread or total for one quarter or one half, settled on that period alone.

Some teams start fast and fade. Quarter markets let you bet on that.

  • Player points

Over or under a player's line?

Bet on how many points one player scores. Some markets combine stats, such as points plus rebounds.

Check the injury report. A player listed as doubtful may not play, or may play fewer minutes.

  • Top scorer

    Who scores the most?

Pick the player with the most points in the game. The prices are bigger because several players have a real chance.

Keep the stake small. One hot shooting night can change the answer.

02Point spread

How does a basketball point spread work?

Backing the favourite at -5.5

Take five and a half points off the favourite's final score, then see who's ahead. In practice, the favourite has to win by six or more for the bet to win.

  • Favourite wins by 10Wins
  • Favourite wins by 6Wins
  • Favourite wins by 5Loses
  • Favourite wins by 1Loses
  • Underdog winsLoses

The underdog bet at +5.5 is the mirror image: it wins if the underdog wins outright or loses by five or fewer.

What if the line is a whole number?

At -5, a five-point win lands exactly on the line. That's called a push, and your stake comes back. Half-point lines like -5.5 can't land exactly, so they always have a winner and a loser.

03Settlement

Does overtime count in basketball bets?

Full game or one period

A tied basketball game goes to five minutes of overtime, and more if it's still level. Full-game markets such as match winner, the spread and total points usually include overtime, so extra points count towards your total.

Quarter and half markets only look at that period. A first-half total settles at half-time, whatever happens later. The betting rules list how each market settles.

04In-play

What should you watch when betting live?

Basketball scores change every few seconds, so live prices move all game. These are the moments that move them most.

  • Scoring runs

A 10-0 run can swing the price a long way in two minutes. Leads in basketball are rarely safe until late.

  • Foul trouble

A star player with early fouls may sit for long spells. Watch the bench before you bet.

  • Timeouts and the clock

Close games slow down at the end with fouls and timeouts, and the last two minutes can take much longer than two minutes.

  • Tired legs

Teams on the second night of a back-to-back often fade in the fourth quarter.

To close a position before the buzzer, lay the side you backed at the current price. The live betting guide explains how.

05Leagues

Which basketball leagues can I bet on?

Most of the betting is on the NBA, but the EuroLeague and international games are on your ID too. Game length changes the totals, so check which one you're betting on.

EuroLeague40 minutes4 × 10 minOctober to May

NBA games start late at night or early in the morning in India, so many players bet on them before bed or follow them live over breakfast.
