Esports betting

Esports betting, map by map

The short answer

Esports betting means staking money on professional video game matches, such as Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Valorant and League of Legends. Most matches are a series of maps or games, like best of three, so you can bet on the series winner, a single map, or the map score. On KhelKing you can bet before a match starts or live while it's played.

Prices are an example. The same ₹500 on Team A at -1.5 would return ₹1,300, but only on a 2-0 win.

Key takeaways

  • Most esports matches are a series: best of one, three or five maps or games. Check the format before you bet.
  • A map handicap of -1.5 in a best-of-three means the team has to win 2-0.
  • CS2 and Valorant maps are won in rounds. Dota 2 and League of Legends games end when a base falls.
  • Line-up changes and patches can shift a team's form quickly, so check recent results on the current patch.
  • Four main games

Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Valorant and League of Legends.

  • Big tournaments

CS2 Majors, The International, Valorant Champions and LoL Worlds.

  • Series and maps

Bet on the whole series or on one map at a time.

  • Pre-match and live

Prices move round by round and fight by fight.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. KhelKing esports covers Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Valorant and League of Legends, before the match and live.
  2. In a best-of-three, the first team to win two maps takes the series.
  3. A -1.5 map handicap bet on the favourite needs a 2-0 win.
  4. A match that isn't played, or a walkover, usually voids match bets.

01Markets

The esports markets you'll see most

The same markets run across all four games. What changes is how a map is won, which decides how totals and early markets work.

  • Match winner

    Who wins the series?

Pick the team that wins the match, whatever the format. In a best-of-three, that's the first team to two maps.

Best-of-one matches are less predictable, so favourites lose them more often.

  • Map winner

    Who takes one map?

A bet on a single map or game in the series, such as map 1. It settles when that map ends.

Teams pick and ban maps first. A side playing its own pick is often stronger.

  • Map handicap

    By how many maps?

The favourite gives up maps. At -1.5 in a best-of-three they need a 2-0 win, and at +1.5 the underdog only needs to take one map.

A good way to get a better price on a strong favourite.

  • Correct map score

    What's the final map score?

Pick the exact series score, such as 2-1. It's harder to call than the winner, so it pays more.

Close teams often go the distance, so a 2-1 either way is worth a look.

  • Totals

    Over or under the line?

Total maps in the series, total rounds on a CS2 or Valorant map, or total kills in a Dota 2 or LoL game.

Two evenly matched teams tend to push round and map totals up.

  • First blood and objectives

    Who gets there first?

Bets on the first kill, the first tower or the first big objective in a map. They settle early in the game.

Keep stakes small. These come down to a single moment.

02The games

Which esports can I bet on?

Four games carry most of the betting. Shooters are played in rounds, and the two battle arenas end when one team's base is destroyed.

What should you check before betting?

Recent results on the current patch matter more than reputation. Games are updated every few weeks, and a change to weapons or heroes can help one team's style and hurt another's.

Check the line-up too. Esports rosters change often, and a team playing with a stand-in is usually weaker than its record suggests.

03Map handicap

How does a map handicap work?

Backing the favourite at -1.5

In a best-of-three, a -1.5 handicap takes one and a half maps off the favourite's score. Only a 2-0 win beats it.

  • Favourite 2-0Wins
  • Favourite 2-1Loses
  • Favourite 1-2Loses
  • Favourite 0-2Loses

The underdog at +1.5 is the other side of the same bet: it wins on any result except a 2-0 defeat.

04Settlement

What happens if a match is forfeited or replayed?

Forfeits, remakes and changed formats

If a match isn't played, or one team gets a walkover, match bets are usually void and stakes are returned. A map restarted for technical reasons settles on the replayed result.

If the organiser changes the format, such as best of three to best of one, some markets may be void. The betting rules cover each case.

05In-play

What should you watch when betting live?

Esports prices move after every round or fight. These are the moments that move them most.

  • Economy rounds

In CS2 and Valorant, a team that loses a few rounds may have to save money. Prices often move before the next gun round.

  • Big team fights

In Dota 2 and LoL, one won fight can hand a team an objective and a gold lead. Expect a sharp move afterwards.

  • Map picks

Each team usually picks a map. If the first map was the winner's pick, the next one may suit their opponent.

  • Pauses

Technical and tactical pauses stop play and often suspend markets. Wait for the game to restart before you bet.

To close a position before the series ends, lay the team you backed at the current price. The live betting guide explains how.
