Baseball betting

Baseball betting, pitch by pitch

The short answer

Baseball betting means staking money on who wins a game, by how many runs, or how many runs are scored. Major League Baseball is the biggest league to bet on. An MLB game runs for nine innings and goes to extra innings if the score is level, so the main market has two outcomes and no draw.

  • Major League Baseball

30 teams, a long regular season and the World Series in October.

  • Nine innings

Each side bats until it has made three outs, nine times over.

  • Starting pitchers

The named starter often moves the price more than the team sheet.

  • No MLB ties

A level game goes to extra innings until someone is ahead.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. An MLB game is nine innings, and extra innings are played until one side leads, so the regular moneyline has no draw.
  2. The run line is usually set at 1.5, so the favourite has to win by two or more runs.
  3. The starting pitchers shape the price more than almost anything else, so check them before you bet.
  4. A first five innings bet takes the bullpens out of the equation and settles on the score after five.

01Markets

The baseball markets you'll see most

Moneyline and Run line are the usual starting points, though what's open changes from one baseball fixture to the next.

  • Moneyline

    Who wins the game?

The main baseball market: pick the winner, extra innings included. There are two outcomes because MLB games can't end level.

Compare the two starting pitchers before anything else.

  • Run line

    By how many runs?

Baseball's handicap, usually 1.5 runs. At -1.5 the favourite must win by two or more, and at +1.5 the underdog can lose by one and still win you the bet.

Plenty of games are decided by one run, so -1.5 is harder than it looks.

  • Total runs

    Over or under the line?

Add both teams' runs and compare them with the line, such as 8.5. Extra innings usually count, so check the market rules.

Ballpark and wind can matter as much as the two line-ups.

  • First five innings

    Who leads after five?

Winner or total for the first five innings only. Starting pitchers usually last that long, so the relief pitchers matter less.

Useful when you trust a starter but not the bullpen behind them.

  • Player markets

    Strikeouts, hits or home runs?

Bets on one player's numbers, such as a pitcher's strikeouts or a batter's hits.

Wait for the confirmed line-up. A rested player can void or sink the bet.

How does a baseball game work?

Totals and run lines all come from how runs are scored, so these basics are worth knowing.

  • 9

    Innings

Each team bats once per inning. The home side bats second and skips the bottom of the ninth if it's already ahead.

  • 3 per side

    Outs

A batting side's half inning ends after three outs.

  • 3 strikes

    Strikeout

Three strikes and the batter is out. Pitcher strikeout markets count these.

  • 1

    Run

A runner who gets round all the bases and back to home plate scores one run.

  • 1 to 4

    Home run

The batter and anyone on base all score, so a grand slam is worth four runs.

  • If level

    Extra innings

Play continues inning by inning until one team finishes an inning ahead.

03Settlement

What happens to a baseball bet if rain stops play?

Check how many innings were played

MLB generally treats a game as official after five innings, or four and a half if the home team is ahead. A game stopped before then can be suspended or replayed.

Whether your bet stands depends on the market, because a total or a full-game bet may need more innings than a moneyline. The betting rules set out each case, so read them when the forecast looks poor.

04In-play

What should you watch when betting on baseball live?

Prices move with every run, and also with the pitching changes that come before them.

  • Pitching changes

When a starter tires, the relief pitcher can change the game. A weak bullpen makes a late lead less safe.

  • Runners on base

The price reflects the threat as well as the score. Bases loaded with one out is worth more than an empty inning.

  • The late innings

A team leading in the ninth usually brings in its closer, and the other side's outs are running out.

  • The batting order

The top of the order coming up is more dangerous than the bottom, even with the same score.

To close a baseball position before the end, lay the side you backed at the current price. The live betting guide explains how.

06FAQ

Baseball betting questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

01

Can a baseball game end in a draw?

Not in a regular MLB game. A level game goes to extra innings until one team finishes an inning ahead. Some leagues outside the United States do allow ties, so check the market rules for those.

02

What does -1.5 mean on a baseball run line?

The favourite needs to win by two or more runs for the bet to win. If you take +1.5, your team can lose by one run and the bet still wins.

03

What is a first five innings bet in baseball?

A bet on the score after five innings only, either the leader or the total runs. What happens in the later innings doesn't affect it.

04

Why do starting pitchers matter so much in baseball betting?

A starter usually faces more batters than any other pitcher, so a change of starter can shift the price a long way. Check the market rules for what happens to your bet if the named pitcher changes.

05

How do I work out what a baseball bet pays?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds. ₹500 at 1.80 returns ₹900, which is ₹400 profit.
