Darts betting

Darts betting, leg by leg

The short answer

Darts betting means staking money on who wins a match, by how many legs, or how many 180s are thrown. Each leg starts at 501, and a player has to finish on a double. The Professional Darts Corporation runs the biggest events, including the World Championship and the Premier League.

  • PDC events

The World Championship and the Premier League are the biggest draws.

  • 501 down

Players take three darts a turn and count down to zero.

  • 180 is the max

Three treble 20s make the highest score from one turn.

  • Finish on a double

The highest possible checkout is 170.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. Each leg counts down from 501, and the last dart has to land in a double or the bullseye.
  2. Some events are played in legs only, and others group legs into sets, so check the format first.
  3. A three-dart average is the most useful quick measure of a player's scoring.
  4. Checkout percentage decides close matches, because a heavy scorer still has to hit the double.

01Markets

The darts markets you'll see most

Match winner and Leg handicap are the usual starting points, though what's open changes from one darts fixture to the next.

  • Match winner

    Who wins the match?

Pick the player who reaches the winning number of legs or sets first.

Compare recent three-dart averages and doubles, as well as ranking.

  • Leg handicap

    By how many legs?

The favourite gives up legs. At -2.5 they have to win by three legs or more.

The throw alternates, so a good player's throw is usually expected to be held.

  • Total 180s

    Over or under the line?

Count the maximums thrown by both players across the match.

Longer formats mean more legs and more chances, so scale your view with the distance.

  • Highest checkout

How big is the biggest finish?

A bet on the highest finish of the match, or which player hits it.

Checkouts are volatile, so keep your stake small.

  • Correct score

    What's the exact result?

Pick the final score in legs or sets. Harder to get right than the winner and pays more.

Short formats are less predictable, because one break of throw can decide them.

02Format

How does scoring work in darts?

Totals, handicaps and checkouts all follow from these rules.

  • 501

    A leg

Both players start on 501 and take turns of three darts to reach exactly zero.

  • Usually 5 legs

    A set

Some events, such as the PDC World Championship, group legs into sets.

  • 60

    Treble 20

The highest single dart on the board. Three of them make a 180.

  • 50

    Bullseye

The bull counts as a double, so it can finish a leg.

  • Must finish

    Double out

The last dart has to land in a double. Going below zero or leaving one is a bust, and the turn's score doesn't count.

  • Alternates

    The throw

Players take turns throwing first in each leg, which is a real advantage.

03Settlement

What happens to a darts bet if a player withdraws?

It depends on the market and the rules

Players do occasionally withdraw through illness or injury, before or during a match. Whether your bet stands, is voided or settles on the result so far depends on when it happens and which market you backed.

Most televised matches are knockout, so there's a winner. Some group or league formats can finish level, so look for a draw option in the market. The betting rules cover each case.

04In-play

What should you watch when betting on darts live?

Prices can turn on one missed double, so the score in legs only tells part of the story.

  • Who has the throw

Winning the leg you throw first is expected. Winning on the other player's throw, a break, is what moves a match.

  • Missed doubles

A player scoring heavily but missing doubles may be closer to a good run than the score suggests, or may be feeling the pressure.

  • The average

A three-dart average well above the opponent's over several legs is a stronger sign than one big turn.

  • Match darts

Prices swing hard at the end of a match. Markets may pause briefly around these moments.

To close a darts position before the end, lay the side you backed at the current price. The live betting guide explains how.

06FAQ

Darts betting questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

01

What does a 180 mean in darts?

It's the highest score from one turn: three darts in the treble 20. Total 180s markets count how many are thrown in a match.

02

What is the highest checkout in darts?

170, from treble 20, treble 20 and the bullseye. A leg has to end on a double, and the bull counts as one.

03

Can a darts match end in a draw?

Knockout matches can't. Some group or league formats can finish level, so check the event's format and whether the market lists a draw.

04

What is the difference between legs and sets in darts?

A leg is one game from 501. Some events group legs into sets, so a player has to win a number of legs to take a set. Others just play to a number of legs.

05

How do I work out what a darts bet pays?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds. ₹500 at 1.55 returns ₹775, which is ₹275 profit.
