World Test Championship

World Test Championship betting, five days at a time

The short answer

World Test Championship betting means staking money on the ICC's two-year Test league: a single Test, a whole series, or the one-off final. Test matches can be drawn, so the draw is a market of its own and it changes how every price is set. KhelKing covers every WTC series with pre-match markets, live markets through each session, and outrights on the final.

At a glance

  • The WTC is a two-year league for nine Test nations, ending in a one-off final between the top two.
  • Test match odds have three outcomes, because a match can be drawn.
  • A win is worth 12 points, a tie 6 and a draw 4. Teams are ranked on the percentage of available points they win.
  • Tests aren't shortened by DLS. Time lost to rain simply makes a draw more likely.
  • Run by the ICC

Nine Test nations in one league table.

  • Two-year cycle

Six series each, then a one-off final.

  • Up to five days

Three sessions a day, with prices moving through each one.

  • Win, lose or draw

The draw is a real result, and a real market.

Key takeaways

  1. The draw is one of three outcomes in WTC match odds, and it matters most when rain is forecast or the pitch is flat.
  2. Nine WTC teams each play six series over two years, and the top two meet in the final.
  3. A WTC win is worth 12 points, a tie 6, a draw 4 and a loss nothing.
  4. If the WTC final is drawn or tied after the reserve day, the two teams share the title.

01Markets

WTC markets worth knowing

A Test has three possible results and can last five days, so these markets work differently from ODI and T20 betting.

  • Match odds

Team A, team B or the draw?

Three outcomes instead of two. Each team's price takes the chance of a draw into account.

Check the forecast. Rain takes time out of the match, which makes a draw more likely and shortens its price.

  • The draw

    No winner after five days?

Back the match to end without a result. Flat pitches and wet weather make draws more likely.

Pitches that turn sharply rarely produce a draw. Someone usually wins on day four or five.

  • Series result

    Who wins the series?

Back one team to win the series, or the series to be drawn.

Home sides win most Test series, so an away win usually carries a bigger price.

  • Correct series score

    What's the final scoreline?

Predict the exact series score, such as 2-1 in a three-Test series. Drawn Tests count towards it.

Allow for draws. A five-Test series rarely finishes with all five decided.

  • First innings lead

Who leads after one innings each?

Back the team ahead once both sides have batted once. It settles long before the match result.

A way to back the side batting first on a good pitch, without needing them to win.

  • WTC final outrights

Who reaches and wins the final?

Back a team to finish in the top two, or to win the final.

Look at the fixtures left. More home Tests usually means an easier path to the final.

How does World Test Championship betting work?

Pick a market and you'll see a decimal price. If your bet wins, you get your stake times that price, so ₹1,000 on the draw at 3.40 returns ₹3,400.

Test bets can take up to five days to settle, and outrights on the final settle when the cycle ends. KhelKing is an exchange, so you can lay the side you backed at the current price to close a position before the match finishes.

02Format

How does the World Test Championship work?

Nine nations each play six series over two years, three at home and three away. Series run from two to five Tests, so teams play different numbers of matches. Ranking them on the percentage of points they win, rather than the total, keeps the table fair. The top two then meet in a one-off final.

One WTC cycle, start to finish
  1. Year one and two

    9 teams

Six series each, three at home and three away, of two to five Tests.

  2. League table

    % of points

Ranked on the share of available points won, so teams with different fixture counts compare fairly.

  3. Final

    Top 2

One Test at a neutral ground, with a reserve day.

03Points table

How are World Test Championship points awarded?

Points are deducted for slow over rates. Late in a cycle, one draw or one penalty can decide who reaches the final.

  • Win

    12

    points

  • Tie

    6

    points

  • Draw

    4

    points

  • Loss

    0

    points

Working out the percentage

Take a team that has played 10 Tests. The most it could have won is 120 points. With six wins and two draws it has 72 + 8 = 80 points, which is 66.7%. That percentage is what decides its place in the table.

04Reading a Test

What moves the odds during a Test match?

Early pitches tend to help seamers, and by days four and five spinners usually take over. These are the moments that move live prices most.

  • Wickets

The biggest single mover, followed by run rate and how much time is left in the match.

  • The new ball

A new ball is available every 80 overs. Seamers are often most dangerous just after it's taken.

  • Days four and five

Pitches wear, turn and keep low late in a Test, which brings spinners into the game.

  • Declarations and the follow-on

A declaration shows how hard a team is pushing for a win. A big first-innings lead can mean the follow-on.

  • Weather

Overcast skies help swing bowling in any session, and lost overs make the draw more likely.

05The final

What happens in the World Test Championship final?

One Test, no home side

The top two teams play a single Test at a neutral ground, so neither side has home advantage. A reserve day is kept to make up time lost to weather.

If the match is still drawn or tied after that, the two teams share the title. That makes the draw a real outcome in the final, and worth pricing in when you bet on it.

06Rain

What happens to Test bets if rain interrupts play?

Lost time, not a new target

Tests don't use DLS. Rain just takes overs out of the match, which leaves less time to force a result and makes the draw more likely.

Match bets stand once the Test has started and settle on the official result. Session and player bets stand only if the play they cover takes place. The betting rules cover every case.

World Test Championship betting questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

Match odds with the draw, series result, correct series score, first innings lead, top batter and bowler, session runs, and outrights on the final.

02

Can I bet on the draw in a Test match?

Yes. The draw is one of the three outcomes in Test match odds, and it matters most when rain is forecast or the pitch is flat.

03

How many teams play in the World Test Championship?

Nine. Each plays six series over two years, three at home and three away, and the top two in the table meet in the final.

04
