Casino table games: rules & house edge

The short answer

Table games are casino games played on a dealer's layout: blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker-style games such as Casino Hold'em and Three Card Poker, and the dice game Sic Bo. The house edge runs from about 0.5% in blackjack with basic strategy to 5.26% in American roulette. Rules and edge stay the same whether a table is live or RNG.

House edge on the main bet

Key takeaways

  • Blackjack played with basic strategy has the lowest edge, about 0.5%. The Banker bet in baccarat is next at about 1.06%.
  • Pick a single-zero roulette wheel. American double-zero roulette nearly doubles the edge, from 2.70% to 5.26%.
  • Sic Bo's Small (4 to 10) and Big (11 to 17) bets carry a 2.78% edge and both lose on any triple.
  • Live and RNG tables share the same rules and edge. Live games are slower, so you place fewer bets an hour.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. Blackjack with basic strategy has the lowest house edge of the table games, at about 0.5%.
  2. The Banker bet in baccarat comes next, at about 1.06% after the 5% commission.
  3. European roulette's single zero gives a 2.70% edge, against 5.26% for American roulette's double zero.
  4. Blackjack insurance carries an edge of about 7%, far worse than the main game.

01House edge

Which table game has the lowest house edge?

The house edge is the share of each stake the casino keeps over the long run. Lower is better for you.

Standard long-run figures for common rules. A table's own paytable can change them, so check its rules before you play.

Blackjack

How do you play blackjack?

You and the dealer each get two cards, and the aim is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards 2 to 10 count at face value, jacks, queens and kings count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. An ace with any 10-value card is a blackjack.

On your turn you can:

  • Hit: take another card
  • Stand: keep your total
  • Double: double the stake and take one card
  • Split: turn a pair into two hands

The dealer has no choices and draws by a fixed rule. Because your decisions matter, playing basic strategy brings the house edge down to about 0.5%. Skip insurance: it is a side bet with an edge of about 7%.

Roulette

How does roulette work?

The dealer spins the wheel, the ball drops into a numbered pocket, and every bet covering that number wins. The wheel decides the house edge:

  • European: 37 pockets with a single zero. 2.70% edge.
  • French: The same wheel, plus La Partage: you get half your even-money stake back when the ball lands on zero. 1.35% on those bets.
  • American: 38 pockets, adding a double zero. 5.26% on most bets.

Baccarat

How do you play baccarat?

Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker, and the one whose total is closer to 9 wins. Tens and face cards count zero, and only the last digit of a total counts, so 7 and 8 make 5. The dealer draws any third cards by fixed rules. Your only decision is which bet to place.

Baccarat bets: payout and house edge
BetPaysHouse edge
Banker1:1 less 5% commission~1.06%
Player1:1~1.24%
Tie8:1~14.4%

Banker wins slightly more often, which is why it pays a 5% commission. Even with that, it is the lowest-edge bet on the table. The tie pays well but has a far higher edge.

Casino Hold'em

How does Casino Hold'em work?

It's Texas Hold'em played against the dealer instead of other players, and it plays out in four steps:

  1. 1Place an ante. You and the dealer each get two cards, and three community cards are dealt face up.
  2. 2Call by betting twice the ante, or fold and lose the ante.
  3. 3Two more community cards are dealt, and both hands make the best five-card poker hand.
  4. 4The dealer needs a pair of 4s or better to qualify. If the dealer doesn't, your ante is paid from the paytable and the call is returned. If the dealer does, the better hand wins.

The ante carries a house edge of about 2.16%.

Three Card Poker

How do you play Three Card Poker?

Place an ante and you and the dealer each get three cards. Look at your hand, then make a Play bet equal to the ante or fold. The dealer needs queen high or better to qualify. If the dealer doesn't, your ante pays even money and the Play bet is returned. If the dealer qualifies, the better hand wins both bets. The optional Pair Plus side bet pays on your own hand, whatever the dealer holds.

With only three cards, a straight is rarer than a flush, so it ranks higher. The Ante and Play combination has an edge of about 3.4%.

  1. Straight flush0.22%
  2. Three of a kind0.24%
  3. Straight3.26%
  4. Flush4.96%
  5. Pair16.94%
  6. High card74.39%

Sic Bo

How do you play Sic Bo?

The dealer shakes three dice and you bet on what they show. The two main bets are Small, a total of 4 to 10, and Big, a total of 11 to 17. Both pay even money and both lose when all three dice match (a triple). That rule is where the 2.78% house edge comes from.

Other bets cover a specific total, a single number appearing, pairs and triples. They pay more and usually carry a much higher edge, so check the table's paytable first.

03Live or RNG

Should you play live or RNG table games?

The maths is the same. What changes is how the result is made and how fast rounds come.

Real cards, wheel or dice
Pace

RNG

Speed is the part people miss. The edge takes the same share of every bet, so the more rounds you play in an hour, the more you can expect to lose in that hour at the same stake. A slower live table costs less per hour than a fast RNG one.

05FAQ

Table game questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

01

What are casino table games?

Games played on a dealer's layout, such as blackjack, roulette, baccarat, Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker and Sic Bo. They run either with a live dealer on camera or on a random number generator.

02

Which table game has the best odds?

Blackjack, if you follow basic strategy. That brings the house edge down to about 0.5%. The Banker bet in baccarat comes next at about 1.06%.

03

How do European and American roulette differ?

European roulette has 37 pockets with a single zero and a 2.70% edge. American roulette adds a double zero, making 38 pockets and raising the edge on most bets to 5.26%.

04

Should I take insurance in blackjack?

No. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack, and it carries a house edge of about 7%, far worse than the main game.

05

Why does the Banker bet in baccarat pay commission?

Banker wins slightly more often than Player because of the drawing rules. The 5% commission on Banker wins evens that out, leaving an edge of about 1.06%.

06

Can you count cards in live blackjack?

It gives you very little. Live tables reshuffle or change the shoe often, so a count rarely builds up to anything useful.

07

What is the minimum bet at a table game?

Each table has its own minimum and maximum stake. Ask KhelKing support on WhatsApp for the limits on any table before you play.

08

Can I play table games on my phone?

Yes. Table games are in the KhelKing app and on the mobile site, on the same login you use for sports.
