Online slots: how the reels pay out

The short answer

An online slot uses a random number generator to pick the result of every spin. You win when matching symbols land on a payline, a set of ways or a cluster. Two numbers tell you most of what to expect: RTP, usually between 94% and 97%, is the share of stakes paid back over the long run, and volatility says whether wins come small and often or big and rarely.

Typical RTP

Key takeaways

  • RTP is a long-run average. A 96% slot keeps about ₹40 of every ₹1,000 staked, but any one session can land far above or below that.
  • Volatility matters as much as RTP. Low-volatility slots pay small wins often; high-volatility slots go quiet for long stretches and save their value for bonus rounds.
  • Progressive jackpot slots put part of every stake into the pot, so their base-game RTP is lower, often 88% to 94%.
  • Every spin is independent. No slot is ever due to pay, and no system changes the result.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  1. A 96% RTP slot keeps about ₹40 of every ₹1,000 spun over the long run, though one session can land far from that.
  2. Progressive jackpot slots usually pay back less, around 88% to 94%, because part of each stake funds the jackpot.
  3. High-volatility slots pay less often but can pay much more, usually in bonus rounds.
  4. A slot has no memory, so a long dry spell doesn't make the next spin more likely to pay.

01Slot types

Six kinds of slot, explained

The layout decides how wins are counted. The figures below are typical ranges; each game's info screen has its own.

  • RTP 95% to 97%

    Classic slots

Three reels and a handful of paylines, with fruit, bars and sevens. Simple to read and usually gentle on a budget.

    Volatility: Low to medium

  • RTP 94% to 97%

    Video slots

Five reels, themed graphics and bonus features. Most pay on fixed lines or on 243 or 1,024 ways.

    Volatility: Any

  • RTP 95% to 96.5%

    Megaways

Each reel shows a different number of symbols on every spin, so the number of ways to win changes each time, up to 117,649.

    Volatility: High

  • RTP 95% to 97%

    Cluster pays

No reels in the usual sense. Groups of matching symbols that touch each other pay, then drop away so new ones can fall in.

    Volatility: Medium to high

  • RTP 88% to 94%

    Progressive jackpots

A slice of every stake goes into a jackpot that keeps growing until someone wins it. The trade-off is a lower base-game RTP.

    Volatility: High

  • RTP Close to the base game

    Bonus buy slots

Pay a fixed price, often around 100 times your stake, to go straight to the bonus round instead of waiting for it to trigger.

    Volatility: High

02How slots pay

How do online slots work?

The spin

When you press spin, a random number generator picks where each reel stops. The animation just shows a result that's already been decided. The paytable then checks for matching symbols on the paylines, ways or clusters that game uses, and pays any win at the multiple listed for that symbol.

Each spin is independent. The slot doesn't remember the last spin, so a long run without a win doesn't make the next one more likely.

What do RTP and house edge mean in slots?

RTP (return to player) is the share of all stakes a slot pays back over a very long run. The rest is the house edge. A 96% slot pays back ₹960 of every ₹1,000 staked on average and keeps ₹40. Short sessions swing a long way either side of that.

One slot can come in several RTP versions, and the casino chooses which to run. The game's info screen shows the version you're playing.

Expected cost on ₹1,000 of spins
  • 97%₹30
  • 96%₹40
  • 94%₹60
  • 92%₹80
  • 88%₹120

What are paylines, ways and cluster pays?

  • Paylines: Fixed paths across the reels. Matching symbols must land on one, usually starting from the leftmost reel.
  • Ways: Any matching symbol on neighbouring reels counts, whatever its row. Five reels of three rows make 243 ways; four rows make 1,024.
  • Megaways: Ways, but each reel shows two to seven symbols on every spin, giving up to 117,649 ways.
  • Cluster pays: A group of matching symbols touching side by side pays, usually five or more, wherever it sits on the grid.

03Volatility

What is slot volatility?

Two slots with the same RTP can feel completely different. Volatility tells you how the returns are spread out.

  • Volatility

    Low

    Wins
    Small wins, often
    How it feels
Your balance moves slowly in both directions.
    Fits
Long sessions on a small budget
  • Volatility

    Medium

    Wins
A mix of small and mid-size wins
    How it feels
Steady play with the odd bigger hit.
    Fits
    Most players
  • Volatility

    High

    Wins
Rare wins, some of them large
    How it feels
Long dry spells, with most value in bonus rounds.
    Fits
    Bigger budgets and patience

Match volatility to your budget. On a small balance, a high-volatility slot can run out before a bonus round ever lands.

04Features

How do free spins and bonus rounds work?

  • Wild

Stands in for other symbols to complete a win. Some wilds expand, stick or carry a multiplier.

  • Scatter

Pays wherever it lands, on or off a line. Three or more usually trigger free spins.

  • Multiplier

Multiplies a win by a set amount, often growing as a bonus round goes on.

  • Free spins

A run of spins at no cost, played at the stake that triggered them. Extra features often apply.

How do progressive jackpots work?

A small part of every stake on the game, sometimes across many casinos, goes into a shared jackpot that grows until someone wins it. The jackpot is usually won in a special bonus game or on a rare symbol combination.

Because that money comes out of the regular returns, the base game pays back less. Progressive slots often run at 88% to 94% RTP, against 96% or so for a standard video slot.

Is there a way to win at slots?

No strategy beats the random number generator, and every slot keeps a share of what it takes over time. What you can control is how long your money lasts and how much you spend:

  • Pick a higher-RTP game, and check the info screen for the version you're on.
  • Match volatility to your budget.
  • Set a session budget and a stake that gives you at least 100 spins.
  • Decide in advance when you'll stop, win or lose.

06FAQ

Slot questions

Can't find your answer? Our support team is online 24/7.

01

What is RTP in slots?

Return to player: the share of all money staked on a slot that it pays back over a very long run. A 96% RTP slot keeps about 4%, or ₹40 for every ₹1,000 spun. A single session can land well above or below that.

02

Which slots have the highest RTP?

Classic and many video slots run at 96% to 97%. Progressive jackpot slots usually sit lower, around 88% to 94%, because part of each stake funds the jackpot. Check the info screen, since one game can come in several RTP versions.

03

What does volatility mean in slots?

It describes how wins are spread out. Low-volatility slots pay small amounts often. High-volatility slots pay less often but can pay much more, usually in bonus rounds.

04

Are online slots random?

Yes. A random number generator decides each spin the moment you press the button, and every spin is independent of the ones before it.

05

Can a slot be due to pay out?

No. The slot has no memory, so a long run without a win doesn't make the next spin more likely to pay.

06

What is a scatter symbol?

A symbol that pays wherever it lands on the reels, not only on a payline. Three or more scatters usually start free spins or a bonus round.

07

What is a bonus buy in slots?

An option to pay a set price, often around 100 times your stake, to start the bonus round straight away. It costs more per round and suits bigger budgets.

08

Can I play slots on my phone?

Yes. Slots are in the KhelKing app and on the mobile site, on the same login you use for sports and the live casino.
